Preparing for HPAI

WReNNZ is working with the lead agents for HPAI from the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for Primary Industries on guidelines for New Zealand Rehabbers.

MPI and DOC are the lead agencies in the response to HPAI. You can find out more about their activities, roles and responsibilities here - MPI and DOC.

While these guidelines are being developed, there are several steps our rehabilitation community can take to prepare. The first is to conduct a biosecurity assessment of your facilities and processes. You can do this assessment with the resource we have created to guide you through.

Biosecurity is a set of practices, things you do every day, that help prevent the introduction of viruses/bacteria/pathogens into your facility and patients. These practices can also prevent the spread between patients or into wild populations.  (Dummies, n.d.)

The second is to arrange meetings with your local authorities and resources – local council and vet clinics. See our suggested talking points.
